We do not have a precise date of when the Swanage Road Race first started but we
know it was in the early 1900’s. The first known mention was from 1908 when a local gentleman named Charlie
Trent won it. He was extremely proud of this and for many years after, he was associated
with the race in the organizing side.
Later in life, when totally dependent on his
walking stick, he used to use this to start the race!
It is the oldest County Road
Race in the country and we still use the silver Challenge Cup which was presented
in 1935 by another local man, Russell Edgar Parsons. He actually presented this
to the Swanage Royal Legion Branch for the ‘Swanage Marathon’, presumably, in those
days, the club organized it.
There must have been a Challenge Cup of some sort before
this one because the first name on the band is dated 1927, won by a P J Hewitt of
Swanage. From 1928 up to 1936 the winners were all either army or RAF which goes
back to the Legion connection.
The next date is then 1947 when it was won by a K
H H Bailey of Bournemouth AC and for the following 8 years it was won by members
of that club. The race name was changed in the 1960’s when it became the ‘Swanage
12’, this reflected the distance although it was not actually 12 miles.
2005 saw
another change when it was changed to an official certificated half marathon. This
is a testing race, the undulating terrain through the beautiful Purbeck countryside
is certainly not for the fainthearted but it is certainly an achievement to do it.
Since 2008 is the centenary of a date that we know of, arrangements are under way to
celebrate the 100 years of the Swanage Road Race.
Please support us with this celebration
and let’s make 2008 a year to remember.
Late entries, Registration and changing
facilities will all be on Sandpit Field, this is adjacent to the seafront and close
to the Start and Finish Line.
Prize giving will take place at 1pm on Sandpit Field.
